| Offset Portfolios |
|
United's partnership with STI enables our customers to contribute to numerous independently-certified projects. Customers may select from four offset portfolios:
Reforestation and Avoided Deforestation
Projects support reforestation and avoided deforestation projects and meet the standards set forth by the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance (www.climate-standards.org), which comprises research institutions, corporations, and non-governmental organizations and promotes rigorous standards for evaluating land-based carbon projects. For example, one initiative in Brazil's Atlantic Forest works with private landowners, government agencies and NGOs to restore up to 4400 acres of threatened lands with native species to enhance water quality for local communities, increase forest habitat for threatened species and mitigate 360,000 tons of CO2 over 30 years.
U.S. Renewable Energy
STI-validated Carbon Offset projects support renewably energy sources such as wind farms and meet Green-e Climate (www.green-e.org) certification and independent environmental reviews. One such project in North Dakota produces power for 30,000 homes.
Gold Standard International Renewable Energy
Gold Standard includes international renewable energy and energy efficiency projects with long-term sustainable development benefits.
United Portfolio
The United Portfolio supports initiatives in each of the above categories with charitable contributions shared between Reforestation/Avoided Deforestation (40%), Renewable Energy (40%), and Gold Standard (20%).
